Snow and ice are expected to bring significant disruption across the UK as temperatures in many places will struggle to get above freezing.

For the Orkney and Shetland islands, a yellow warning for wind has also been issued until 3pm on Sunday. The Met Office has advised those within regions covered by alerts to prepare for delayed journeys, potentially dangerous driving conditions and to take extra time to help avoid slips and falls on the ice.

Amber and yellow weather warnings are in place across the UK as the first weekend of the New Year looks set to be a chilly one.

According to experts at Wavin, more than a million pipes could be at risk of bursting this week, with plumbers expected to be inundated with call outs - the most since Britain’s last extended deep freeze in January 2022.
